What is a Root Canal?
A root canal is an endodontic treatment used to treat a severely infected or damaged tooth. The procedure involves the removal of dental pulp, which is a soft tissue found inside our teeth. Dental pulp consists of nerves, blood vessels, and connective tissues. A root canal may be needed if this dental pulp becomes infected or inflamed.

What to Expect
A root canal procedure starts with taking x-rays of the tooth and then numbing the area. Once you’re numb, the dentist or specialist will drill a small opening in the tooth to gain access to the dental pulp. Tiny instruments are used to remove this inflamed or infected pulp from the pulp chamber and root canals. This area is then cleaned and shaped for the filling. Next, the canals are filled with a rubber-like material called gutta-percha. Once it’s sealed in place, the tooth opening is closed, and a temporary crown is placed over the tooth. You will return to the provider on another date to receive your final crown and restoration. If you think you may need a root canal treatment in Jamestown, ND, Orn Family Dentistry has you covered.
